A SUPERMARKET has become the first retailer to scrap plastic wrap from packs of tinned food.
Tesco will remove plastic packaging from multi-packs of grocery items including baked beans, tuna and tinned tomatoes. The change will apply to Tesco own-brand products and branded products such as Heinz Beans, and will help households reduce the amount of plastic they use.
Tesco CEO Dave Lewis said: “Removing plastic-wrapped multi-packs from every Tesco store in the UK will cut 350 tonnes of plastic from the environment every year and customers will still benefit from the same great-value ‘multi-pack’ price.”
The scheme will be rolled out across Sussex stores from March 2.
The retailer is also exploring opportunities to reuse packaging.
