A POLICE escort led the funeral of a war veteran and long-serving police sergeant yesterday.
Two police motorbikes guided the hearse as Sergeant Frank Morgan was laid to rest. He died last month aged 97. He joined Brighton police force in 1948 and spent nearly three decades as a sergeant in the city.
At Woodvale Crematorium, his white police helmet was laid out on a cushion and carried behind the coffin. He had kept it in his wardrobe since his days in the force.
Born in 1922, Mr Morgan also served in the Second World War, and fought Japanese troops in Myanmar (then Burma). He became the standard bearer for the veterans group the Burma Star Association. Yesterday, the flag he used to carry was carried ahead of the procession.
