AN ALBION fan who taunted a black Spurs player calling him a “monkey boy” has been jailed for eight weeks.

George Reynolds had attended the Seagulls’ home game against Spurs when he made comments.

The 24-year-old was ejected from the stadium by stewards, and was then arrested.
Reynolds racially abused Tottenham Hotspur players, including Son Heung Min, and towards black players.

He said the South Korean international “will eat your dog”, and called black players “monkey boys”.

But other Albion fans at the match in October reported him to stewards.

Reynolds admitted using racially aggravated harassment likely to cause alarm or distress with intent when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last month.

Yesterday, he was brought before Judge Mark Van Der Zwart at Lewes Crown Court for sentence.

The judge revealed it was not the first offence that Reynolds had committed that was racially aggravated.

Reynolds had told the court at a previous hearing he has been dismissed from his job, but had not yet had a response to his application for legal aid.

The judge initially said he would adjourn the case again, but warned him the offence was “extremely serious” and could face a prison term of up to two years.

Reynolds, of Shipley Road, Brighton, was also told he must not attend the Amex Stadium and will face a banning order.

At the time of the incident in October, Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said: “It’s very hard to comprehend why some individuals think it’s acceptable to behave in this way.

“But we are very clear that neither Brighton and Hove Albion, nor the wider football community, will tolerate racism or discrimination at any time, in any form.

“It is very encouraging that in both incidents our stewards were alerted to this totally unacceptable behaviour by other Albion fans.

“Working with Sussex Police, our staff were able to take swift action, which hopefully will increase the chances of a conviction.

“We do not want people exhibiting any kind of discriminatory or antisocial behaviour inside our stadium, and I would like to thank those Albion fans for reporting the incidents to us as soon as they heard it.

“We would urge any fans confronted with similar discriminatory behaviour to report it immediately, either directly to a steward or via our anonymous hotline and we will take strong action.”
