A GROUP of renowned funk musicians has announced a special date in the city.

Pee Wee Ellis, accompanied by American singer and television host China Moses and supported by a selection of skilled musicians and dancers, will be celebrating the spirit of funk music in Funk: A Music Revolution, a brand-new tour featuring a date at Brighton Dome on February 29.

The newly-announced event will be celebrating funk in all its forms, featuring performances by artists from backgrounds ranging from soul music, to jazz and rhythm and blues.

By retracing the history of funk across generations, band leader Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, with a history of working alongside founder of funk James Brown, will be paying homage to the music genre with a line-up featuring remarkable performers.

He said: “From 1967 when Mr Brown and I wrote Cold Sweat until today, funk has been woven into the DNA of popular music.

“We want to tell that story in all its forms”.

The band will showcase funk across the genre, with artists such as trombonist Dennis Rollins, soul singer Omar, bass player Neville Malcolm, US drummer Daru Jones and female talents such as saxophonist Camilla George and rapper Lady Sanity.

The Locksmiths dancers will also make an appearance.

The group will be playing hits such as “Cold Sweat”, composed by the band leader in collaboration with James Brown, “Ain’t Nobody” and “Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud”.

Maija Handover, director of Sound UK, csaid: “This is a brand new project, and we are really hoping that funk music will inspire a whole new audience with its repertoire of bold artists”.
