LIFEBOAT volunteers braved rough sees during a search for a person believed to be in the sea.
The Selsey RNLI crew launched shortly before midnight on Sunday after the reports.
It was feared a person had entered the water.
The boat was launched into the ferocious winds and waves as Storm Ciara lashed Sussex.
It followed a similar RNLI callout in Hastings over reports a man had got into difficulty while surfing.
The person in Selsey was found, but the RNLI volunteers could not get back to the shore as the tide was high
Instead the crew, who included coxswain Colin Pullenger, second Cox Rob Archibald, mechanic Andy Lee, Max Gilligan, Dave Lamdin and Neil Hopcraft, went to Littlehampton Harbour.
They berthed at 2.30am, then departed back for Selsey, where they arrived at 3.35am, and the RNLI said the crew was finally able to go to bed by 4.40am.
