A RETIRING headteacher will be recognised for his “tremendous career of service” at a glamorous ceremony in Bangkok.

Richard Foster will hang up his teaching boots this summer after more than 100 terms as headmaster of Windlesham House School near Pulborough.

The dedicated worker has led the school for 13 years, teaching his mantra “be kind, be kind, be kind”.

Now he has been given a lifetime achievement award by the Times Education Supplement to recognise his dedication.

“It’s been a fantastic privilege to lead Windlesham House, I’m going to miss it hugely,” said Richard.

“I believe passionately in the sector and the benefits of boarding.

“To have the opportunity to lay the foundations for children’s futures has been amazing.

“I cannot hide my delight at winning this award especially as it was kept a secret and my family were there with me at the award ceremony when it was announced.”

The headmaster also thanked wife Rachel for supporting him as school boss.

“I have to pay special thanks to my wife who, as a prep school head’s wife, deserves this award as much as I do,” he said.

“Rachel deserves the recognition even more than I do having been an extraordinary headmaster’s wife every step of way.

“We have been very well supported throughout this long journey by wonderful colleagues, incredibly hard working and committed staff, very loyal and respectful parents and trustworthy governors.

“Above all, it has always been a privilege to have educated such fabulous children.”

Richard will accept his reward at the glamorous International Schools Awards ceremony in Bangkok in November.

Comedian Ivo Graham will present Richard’s award.

Chief judge Ann Mroz congratulated the headmaster on his achievements.

“It recognises a tremendous career of service,” she said.

A Times Education Supplement spokesman said Richard is a “highly respected” by other headteachers.

“Richard Foster has devoted himself to Windlesham House School, creating an environment that students often refer to as a home from home,” he said.

“He has promoted the institution widely with parents and the education community, and is highly respected by other school leaders, who regularly come to him for strategic advice.

“At the heart of his philosophy is the notion that happiness is fundamental for children to do well.”

Many celebrities have passed through the halls of Windlesham House School.

Actor Tom Hiddleston, comedian Adam Buxton, and film director Guy Ritchie all attended the boarding school.

England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty also graduated from Windlesham House.
