AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a student.

Subamso Pul was found dead in his room at Sussex University campus in Falmer at 3.57pm on Sunday.

Other students had feared for the 20-year-old’s welfare after they had not seen him since Friday, February 7.

At Brighton Coroner’s Court on Thursday, coroner’s officer Mike Bebee said the provisional cause of death given at a post mortem was suffocation.

Coroner Veronica Hamilton Deeley requested a GP report for Subamso, who was born in India, as well as statements from his friends at university. In an email to students, a University of Sussex staff member said: “I am very sad to have to share with you the news that Subamso Pul, a student in the social sciences, died at the weekend.

“This is deeply saddening news, and our heartfelt thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

“Some of you may have heard about this and whilst we understand how important it is to talk about this, it would be really helpful if you could avoid speculation, especially on social media. The coroner is carrying out a full investigation and we are assisting with this.”

The full inquest has been adjourned until May 29. The coroner said police are satisfied nobody else was involved.
