A DOMESTIC abuser grabbed his wife by the throat and threw a cigarette at her during a tirade.
Shaun Cornwell lambasted his wife at their home in Cuckmere Way, Brighton.
The couple have been together for more than 20 years but have been struggling with crippling debts, a court heard.
Cornwell has been unable to work because of a back injury, leaving the couple unable to pay the bills.
During one incident at their home, he called her “disgusting” and swore at her.
He said he could punch and kick her and there would be “nothing she could do”.
His wife remained calm during the incident, which “annoyed him even further”, it was revealed.
When she tried to call the police, he grabbed her phone, snapped it and then grabbed her by the throat, Brighton Magistrates’ Court heard.
Martina Sherlock, prosecuting, said his wife was left shaken by the attack.
But he told her: “Stop shaking you fat c***.”
In court, Cornwell admitted assault and criminal damage.
Magistrates were told the relationship had become “toxic” in recent years.
Cornwell, 53, is unable to complete unpaid work because he is signed off work.
Magistrate Mark Durrell ordered him to complete ten rehabilitation sessions and to attend 30 sessions at the Building Better Relationships programme.
He must also pay a £50 fine and £90 surcharge.
