FROM my early days of motoring I’ve seen a lot of changes when it comes to driving.

From the unreliable European-built cars, to the now jump in and drive anywhere cars of today.

The changes were brought on mainly by the car buying customer.

But now we are being forced to buy all electric or hydrogen fuelled vehicles, because climate change is dictating to us in terms of our mode of transport.

Like it or not we have to change and believe me, we are not going to like it.

It will not just be changing our vehicles, we will have to change our habits as well, for this is a new technology and it won’t be cheap.

Hydrogen cars are the biggest problem.

From £65,000 new, they are dear to buy, and at this moment as there are only 13 filling stations in the UK.

The nearest to us is Teddington and Cobham in Surrey.

There is not one in East or West Sussex.

With a 300-mile range on a full tank of five kilos of hydrogen at the cost between £50 to £75 it is the dearest form of fuel, making it even more expensive.

Now with all electric vehicles, with buying from new £17,000 to infinity, you have a wide choice and they are cheaper to run, but hold on, don’t get to excited.

We have many bridges to cross to find euphoria.

Six hours to fully charge a battery, on a long drive, 75 minutes for quick 80 per cent charge.

Like nitrogen powered cars the best mileage on a fully fuelled tank is 300 miles, that is if one person, the driver, is the only one in the car and with no luggage.

Then it is down to the planning, you must be very careful with regard to your route and the time it will take you to get there.

You need to take note of how many people are in the car, to how many stops, to when you will be able to charge the battery.

If it is just to nip around the town, no problem unless you live in a terraced house or block of flats with no parking then it’s a case of finding a charging point near at hand for six hours of charging.

With this city council they will get as much out you as they can, because that what they have done and will keep on doing.

The Green party have in the past showed us that although their intentions are good they have a problem in fulfilling with what is always required to be done.

But please check my figures to see how you need to face reality.
