DETECTIVES has been given more time to question a man arrested on terrorism offences.

The 20-year-old man was arrested at about 5am on Monday in a pre-planned raid at a residential address in Worthing.

He was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under section 41 of the Terrorism ACT (2000).

A "warrant of further detention" has now been granted, allowing investigators to question the man until next Monday.

The arrest was intelligence-led and linked to Islamist-related terrorism.

A search of a residential address in Worthing has now finished, police said.

Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeatter, District Commander for Adur, Worthing and Horsham, said: "Sussex Police have worked closely with the Counter-Terrorism investigators to support their operation which is not in response to any specific threat to our local area.

"Our thanks go to nearby residents in the location involved for their patience and understanding while this operation was carried out."

A spokesman for Counter-Terrorism Policing South East said: "Every year thousands of reports from the public help police tackle the terrorist threat. If you see or hear something that doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and ACT by reporting to police in confidence at gov.uk/ACT.

"Reporting won’t ruin lives, but it could save them. Action Counters Terrorism.

"Remember, in an emergency, always dial 999."
