RESIDENTS in a Llandudno care home aged in their late 80s and 90s, have been learning a cool new skill, how to be a DJ.

Gary Carr, who is the activities coordinator at Queen Elizabeth Court home and is also a professional DJ and radio presenter, was inspired to organise a DJ workshop after residents asked how he played music on a laptop. He uses this at the home’s weekly musical memories sessions.

Among those taking part was 89 year old Bill Bailey, who has a lifelong passion for music and played the accordion when he was very much younger.

He said of the experience: “It was fascinating to find out how technology has advanced from when I was playing vinyl records in my youth to now being able to play music at the touch of a button”.

Gary Carr said: “Our residents really enjoyed themselves and were quite inspired with it all. I was really surprised at their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

"We began by talking about how the technology we use to play music has changed over the years. I explained that my hard drive is basically like an enormous record box that has 60,000 tracks, just about anything anyone can think of and that really blew their minds.

“One of our ladies, Joan, who will be 94 in March, took to mixing, like a duck to water."

Gary added: "It just goes to show you’re never too old to learn something new. There's probably a job waiting for her in a night club.”
