A PERSON has died after being hit by a train this morning.

Police were called after a person was hit at a level crossing in Selmeston near Lewes at 7am today.

Paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

"Officers were called to the line in Selmeston at 6.51am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks," she said.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

The line between Lewes and Eastbourne was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A Southern Rail spokesman said: "We are now working to return train services in the area to the scheduled timetabled and this may take some time.

"Some services remain subject to residual delays and cancellations."

Tickets between Brighton, Lewes, Seaford, and Eastbourne will be accepted on Brighton and Hove Buses.

It has since been reported that trains in the area have returned to normal.
