A SHOPPING centre was evacuated after a reports of a fire.

Churchill Square in Brighton was closed off this afternoon and shoppers were asked to leave.

But a spokeswoman for Sussex Fire and Rescue said there had not been a blaze.

She said: "The fire alarm sounded and we sent out two crews, but it was a false alarm."

The shopping centre is now open again.

On Twitter, Churchill Square's account stated: "The evacuation was a precautionary measure only, and Churchill Square is now back open as normal. We apologise for any inconvenience."
