THREE people were rescued from a blaze after their kitchen caught fire.

The accidental fire broke out last night at a house in Sompting.

One of those inside managed to shut the kitchen door, keeping the fire at bay until fire crews arrived.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service had the flames under control within an hour.

All three people were treated by paramedics. South East Coast Ambulance Service has been contacted for an update on their condition.

The fire service said it had also rescued two dogs.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said three engines from Worthing were sent to the scene at 7.15pm along with the Incident Command Unit from Bognor.

He said: “One crew of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire in the kitchen, while a second crew rescued three people from the property who were handed over to paramedics.

“They also led two dogs to safety, who are now being looked after by neighbours.

“The last pump left the scene at around 9pm.”

It is understood a carer working at the property raised the alarm  and helped two elderly residents to safety.

She managed to isolate the fire in the kitchen by closing the kitchen door.
