SO HARRY and Meghan returned – once again without baby Archie – to fulfil commitments, prior to returning to Canada to start their new “self-supporting” lifestyle.

Doubtless, their departure saddened many readers but it needs to be remembered that in 1931 the Prince of Wales, Edward – known as a playboy before his marriage – met and fell in love with American socialite Wallis Simpson.

In the end Edward abdicated the throne after ruling for less than a year as marriage to a divorcée was forbidden.

Research reveals Wallis as a calculating social climber with aspirations for advancement, a desire that drove her to pursue Edward, forging a relationship that appeared rich and romantic to onlookers but was fraught with deception and opportunism at its core.

Prince Andrew’s relationship with Koo Stark, an American photographer and actress, also comes to mind. Journalist Tina Brown claims this was his only serious love affair.

But after 18 months of dating, the affair came to an end in 1983 for reasons believed to have been associated with her appearance in some racy movies.

Harry has always been a great favourite and his profile and efforts have benefited numerous organisations, including the Marines, enabling him to fulfil his obligations to Queen and country.

Regrettably, the circumstances of his mother’s death when he was 12 have continued to haunt him, making him vulnerable. Regardless of the facts, he continues to blame the paparazzi for this event.

Meghan is probably best known for her role in the American legal drama Suits.

She is said to be a very determined and ambitious woman.

Tom Bower doesn’t think she wanted to be constrained by the royal demands and way of doing things.

Outspoken writer Germaine Greer is said to have predicted the future for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex outside of royal life could be “disastrous” as she appeared to question Meghan’s love for Harry.

Whatever the position, Meghan was accepted into the Royal family, despite being a divorcée and the marked family differences, and given all the privileges associated with her new role.

She was embraced by the public and media coverage accorded with normal expectations for people of prominence.

So what was the underlying reason for the couple’s departure, which might prejudice baby Archie’s birthright?

Was it media intrusion or was this a distraction?

It was apparent that Meghan enjoyed the attention received on her recent visit. Crowds were rapturous and from outset she courted the attention of the media.

Indeed, despite the significance of this historic occasion and ordeal for Harry, she seemed to be engaging in a triumphal departure.

Doubtless Harry and Meghan will continue to thrive and prosper, as there will always be sycophants and other individuals who will seek to benefit from their notoriety.

My concern is that like their A-list celebrity friends, George and Amal Clooney, they will spend increasing time apart as they pursue separate interests. Any bets as to will be left holding the baby?
