LIDL has announced plans to open a big new store in Hove.

The German retailer, which already has a shop in Brighton, hopes to open in the former Toys R Us building.

The toy shop closed in April 2018 after it went bust.

Lidl has applied for planning permission to make changes to the premises at the Goldstone Retail Park, in Old Shoreham Road.

The chain said up to 40 new jobs could be created.

Brighton and Hove City Council has been asked if the shop front can be changed.

It has also been asked if Lidl can provide trolley storage, disabled parking bays and covered cycle parking.

The retailer also wants planning permission to sell food and drink.

Last month Lidl opened its 800th store in Britain, with the discount chain aiming to have 1,000 branches by the end of 2023.
