WILLOWS, birches and crab apples were planted by children and parents in Asker Meadows despite the muddy conditions at the end of an information and advice session including the benefits trees bring to the environment both for wildlife and carbon capture.

Scott Morrison, leader of West Dorset Friends of the Earth, said: “We ask for people to bring us spare trees or unwanted saplings and we pass these on. On Saturday around 50 trees were given away and raffle prizes of more mature trees were donated by Groves nursery.

“As a planting group we do have access to free saplings from organisations like the Woodland Trust. As we near the end of planting season, unplanted trees and those which are too small will be brought on for next year at our new community nursery site.”

The tree planting of Bridport’s new wood at Riverside Gardens scheduled for Friday, March 20 has been postponed by the town council because of coronavirus precautions.
