A COMMUNITY fridge is set to open despite coronavirus fears.

The Weald Allotment Community Fridge In Whitehawk, Brighton, will serve as a food sharing point, with people adding and taking from it as they like.

It will open on March 26 “despite Covid-19" in the Weald allotment site for the 500 allotment-holders who will be sharing surplus fruit and vegetables between themselves.

It will open to the public on April 23 “if circumstances permit” to provide people in food poverty with access to fresh fruit, vegetables and food surplus supplied by local businesses.

Weald Allotment and Gardeners Association chairman, Terry Clegg said: “The Community Fridge is our response to food poverty and food waste in the city of Brighton and Hove.

“Our slogan is ‘Anybody can put food in, anybody can take food out, no questions, no hassle, no waste’.”
