LAST week we were asked to clap for the NHS, currently the backbone of this country.

I have been in hospital in Brighton twice this year and it is still only March.

The last time I was in for a couple of weeks or so.

The nurses and doctors who looked after me were nothing short of angels. I spent this time both on Chichester and Bailey Wards in the old part of the hospital.

I live in a small street, about a dozen houses.

Two minutes to 8pm, I ventured outside to take part in the clapping for the NHS workers.

At 8pm I started clapping and could hear people in the nearby streets doing the same. Looking up and down my street my wife and I were the only people in our street who were clapping.

Out of 40 to 50 people, there was just us.

It was disgraceful, the local residents were nowhere to be seen.

How mean are certain members of the public?

If they happened to get unwell, they would rush to the NHS for help and yet are too blooming lazy to open their doors and applaud all the members of the NHS who are putting their lives on the line.

They are risking their lives for the very people who were too lazy to stick their heads outside their front doors to show their appreciation for these wonderful and brave people.

I am absolutely disgusted with my neighbours.

In fact two of these residences have relatives working for the NHS.

There was no sign of them, who must have been aware, showing their appreciation. Simply unbelievable.

Perhaps they haven’t ever spent time in hospital, but believe me they will be treated as I was – with the best care in the world.
