A CONCERT venue could be converted into a coronavirus field hospital according to a medical journal.

The Brighton Centre is among the buildings "under consideration" by NHS England to become temporary hospitals, the Health Service Journal reported.

Brighton and Hove City Council, which owns the Brighton Centre, said no decisions had been made on any sites in the south east.

"NHS England and military planners at regional level are currently scoping the requirement for additional hospital capacity, over and above that already secured," a spokesman said.

"Currently, no decision has been made on any potential sites in the south east.

"But the assessment teams continue to review their best options to meet the expected demand over the coming weeks.”

Gatwick Airport is also being considered as a hospital site by health chiefs, the website claimed.

So far NHS England has only officially planned temporary Nightingale hospitals for London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

An NHS England spokeswoman said announcements for additional sites will be made in due course.

Gatwick Airport has been approached for comment.
