A COUNCIL has issued fresh guidance on registering births and deaths during the coronavirus lockdown.

West Sussex County Council’s registration service will no longer be operating face-to-face appointments to register deaths.

This will now take place over the phone and an appointment can be booked online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/registeradeath.

If you are already in possession of the medical cause of death certificate, this can be dropped in to a registration office before your phone appointment.

There are offices in Crawley, Chichester, Haywards Heath, and Worthing, and their addresses are listed on the council website.

Meanwhile birth registrations have been postponed for 21 days since March 25. Parents can now make a claim for child benefit or Universal Credit before the birth is registered.

The registration service said it understands parents may not be able to register a new birth within the normal 42-day period at the moment.
