THERE has been an increase in the number of rough sleepers during the coronavirus crisis, councils say.
Adur and Worthing councils said there had been a spike in homelessness, which chimes with similar reports from other local authorities across the country.
The councils said coronavirus had hit people living in insecure housing hard, especially those “sofa surfing” or in temporary lodging.
Last month, ministers said all rough sleepers in England should be given a roof over their head before last weekend.
Adur and Worthing councils said they were working to find accommodation. The housing teams are trying to house the homeless as quickly as possible and they hope to find rooms in empty hotels.
The councils are working closely with charities including Turning Tides and St Clare’s Community Hub in Worthing.
A spokesman for Adur and Worthing councils said they were “working to find rooms and shelter for everyone including in hotels, now shut down because of the crisis, and other premises.”
• The coronavirus Sussex Crisis Fund has been set up to help those affected by the pandemic. The Argus’s charity and American Express have each donated £50,000 to kick-start the appeal.
