POLICE were forced into action after a group of teens flouted social distancing regulations and threw a garden party.

Officers were called to the address in Eastbourne on Wednesday to disperse the 18th birthday celebrations.

Following the incident, Sussex Police youth liaison officer PC Rachel Bourne posted a message on social media.

She said: “I attended an address in Eastbourne with PCSOs where the occupant thought it was suitable to hold an 18th birthday party in the back garden.

“All young people were dispersed and the homeowner was given strong words of advice.

“Why are some people struggling to follow government guidance?”

She also revealed more about how the force will respond to incidents of this nature, saying that officers would be “engaging, explaining and encouraging,” but if this does not work “we can enforce”.

“Second time offenders would be dealt with differently,” she added.

She also explained that “if a young person or group is found they are returned home or their parents are called to collect them”.

“If it happens again, parents or guardians will be looking at enforcement action. It’s evolving daily although some incidents will require immediate enforcement at the time,” she said.
