A RADIO presenter of 13 years is set to return to the airwaves.

Guy Lloyd, who hosted popular radio shows on Juice FM for more than a decade, is Gaydio Brighton's newest voice.

The Brightonian promises a show “as camp as Christmas” in a bid to keep people entertained and together at this time of crisis.

He said: “I am really excited, I love radio and I love Brighton.

“Being in studio on my own with just a mic and the listeners for company is my happy place.

“Radio has always been a powerful media and it’s needed now more than ever.

“I’ll be keeping morale up with a light, fluffy and fun show.”

Guy started at Juice radio in 2005, having decided to give up his career as a social worker to get his voice on the airwaves.

He entertained the city from the studio in North Street, but left the now-defunct station after a series of changes from media company Global.

Guy is hoping to bring his old listeners back to the show, as well as gaining some new ones.

The programme is being broadcasted next door to the old Juice studios.

Guy said: “They approached me about a week ago and said your city needs you, or words to that effect – a familiar voice on the airwaves to bring people together.”

In a message to his fans, he added: “It’s an honour to be working for the UK’s biggest LGBT radio station and I look forward to hopefully putting a smile on your face during a time when we all need to come together.

“Radio comes into its own during times like this and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be able to bring a little joy to your ears.”

It will be broadcast Monday to Thursday between 8pm and 10pm.

The first show is expected on April 20.

You can listen to Gaydio on 97.8FM, on DAB and on your smart speaker by asking for Gaydio Brighton.

The station broadcasts to Brighton and surrounding areas, playing uplifting music sprinkled with a few “gay anthems”.

It tackles the day’s talking points from an LGBT perspective.

Toby Whitehouse, who was previously with the BBC, is the founder of Gaydio and the Brighton branch’s station director.

He said: “I’m not sure whether local legend or icon is the best way to describe Guy – but I think he’d enjoy either.

“We know how much Brighton has missed hearing him on the radio every day, so at a time when we’re all spending more time at home it feels like the city needs his warmth and humour more than ever.

“Gaydio launched in Brighton on 97.8FM and DAB+ last year, from our base on North Street.

“We play uplifting dance and pop, 24/7 so if you’re in need of some good vibes at the moment, we’ve got plenty.

“We’re focused on LGBT listeners but your gay card doesn’t get checked at the door.”
