THE number of people to have died after contracting coronavirus has increased by more than 1,000 this weekend.

Figures released today by Public Health England showed the total had reached 4,934, as of 9am.

On Friday, the total was 3,605, rising to 4,313 yesterday.

The number of coronavirus cases confirmed across Sussex has also risen since the start of the weekend.

Brighton and Hove experienced its sharpest overnight increase since the initial outbreak, jumping from 50 to 71 between Friday and Saturday. A further two patients were confirmed today.

East Sussex climbed from 95 to 132 between Friday and today, while the West Sussex total reached 216 - an increase of 46 in two days.

Overall, the county has now had 421 people who have been diagnosed with coronavirus.

In the UK, the number of people to have tested positive has now reached 47,806.
