A CEMETERY will close to the public tomorrow after a council claimed people used it for exercise.

Brighton and Hove City Council will close Woodvale Cemetery to all except funeralgoers from tomorrow in line with Government guidance.

But funeral chief Councillor Daniel Yates said a “minority” used the cemetery for exercise, dog walking, and family outings despite being told not to.

“This is not a decision taken lightly,“ he said.

“Unfortunately, despite requests not to do so, a minority have continued to use the grounds for exercise, dog walking and family outings.

“Cemeteries are a place for mourning and remembrance and people should be allowed to do this in peace.

“The increased numbers of people using the cemetery grounds means social distancing has become more difficult, putting the public and cemetery staff at risk of contracting coronavirus.

“I know that this decision will upset those who wish to visit the graves of loved ones at Woodvale, particularly during this challenging time for us all, but protecting public health must be our number one priority.”

Other cemeteries in the city will remain open but Cllr Yates urged those exercising to go elsewhere.

Funerals will continue at Woodvale but a limit of 12 mourners remains in place.

The news comes as the UK enters a third week of coronavirus lockdown.

The Government has insisted people must only go outside for essential trips, though they may exercise once a day.
