AN ARGUS reader recently stated the he liked the 1960s. He thought we may be a similar age.

The 1960s were exciting. I liked the 60s up until the end of 1964. Pop music then changed.

If we take a quick look at the pop charts of 1962 we would see the theme to Dr Kildare feature. The star was Richard Chamberlain and the girls loved him. There was also another TV theme in the charts... Z Cars. This was also very popular.

Cliff Richard had a double A side with Do You Want to Dance coupled with I’m Looking Out Of The Window.

Cliff’s backing group The Shadows had a huge hit with Wonderful Land.

In July 1962 we saw the first live pictures from the United States.

The satellite was called Telstar and it showed that sound and pictures could be sent up to Telstar and then bounced down to the UK.

Now it is normal to get news from anywhere in the world in seconds.

Singer Frank Ifield had the biggest hit of the year with the song I Remember You.

In the autumn of 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union very nearly went to war.

The Soviets were trying to put missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from the United States.

The US Navy blockaded the island and the Soviets backed off.

In Britain we were told that if there was a war we would have just four minutes to get home.

The biggest instrumental hit of the year was Telstar by Billy Fury’s backing group the The Tornadoes.

The year finished with Elvis Presley’s Return to Sender.

Boxing Day ended with a huge amount of snow. We didn’t see our gardens until March 1963. But that’s another story.
