THE city council rakes in more than £20,000 each month on bus lane fines, researchers suggest.

On average more than 800 fines are given to drivers who veer into bus lanes or who use them to cut short their journeys.

Across Brighton and Hove there are cameras which observe motorists who go into the restricted lanes which are for buses, taxis and cyclists only.

It includes well known areas such as around Churchill Square, Lewes Road and in Eastern Road in Brighton.

The enforcement in Lewes Road started in September 2013.

Northgate vehicle hire submitted a Freedom of Information Act request which revealed that between June 2017 and December 2018, Brighton and Hove City Council made £22,627 in fines each month.

The busiest month was September 2017, when 1,050 fines were issued, bringing in £28,969 to council coffers.

Manchester City Council issued the most notices, making more than £1 million each month on average.
