A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after a serious incident in a town centre.

Police and emergency services are at the scene in Moat Road, East Grinstead this afternoon.

Witnesses said they saw a man being carried off in a stretcher.

It has been reported that two men have suffered injuries.

There are unconfirmed claims of a stabbing and a shooting, but police say at this stage they are "investigating reports of weapons being used".

Pictures from the scene show armed officers guarding a cordoned area.

Meanwhile other officers were seen inspecting a parked car, and have been asking residents in the area if they either saw or heard anything.

Moat Road is usually a busy main road though the town, near St George's Fields and Moat Pond, which are popular spots for walkers.

On Twitter Hannah Turk posted: “Commotion by Moat Pond today - so first we saw a huge amount of police cars and ambulances come down Moat Road from London Road end. 

“Then we walked over to see the road by Moat Pond by King’s field taped off and police with guns guarding the perimeter.

“We couldn’t see much but then the ambulance brought a stretcher out and a police officer then told the disparate crowd to move on.”

The latest pictures from the scene show paramedics working alongside th air ambulance to transfer a man to hospital.

In a statement the police said: "Two men have been injured, one seriously, in an assault in East Grinstead.

"Police were called to Moat Road at 1.33pm on Tuesday (April 14). Two men suffered injuries, the nature and the scale of which have not been fully established at this time, but are not currently thought to be life-threatening. One of the victims is being airlifted to hospital.

"It is believed that that the incident is confined to a small group of people.

"Police are currently searching for a number of people who made off from the scene in a grey Fiat 500 and are investigating reports that weapons were used."
