THE majority of public toilets have closed after reports of increased anti-social behaviour and problems with crowds.

Brighton and Hove City Council shuttered all but five of the city's loos yesterday.

It claimed it could no longer safely manage all public toilets and will instead focus on those used by "vulnerable people".

City environment chief Anne Pissaridou said: "We've been keen to keep most toilets open for as long as possible but have had problems managing crowds and increased anti-social behaviour in some.

"With the continued need for social distancing and fewer people out and about in the city, we now feel it’s right to close the majority to make sure we can protect our residents and staff.

The Argus:

"We will be keeping a few open for the vulnerable people who still need them, where we can manage them safely with the current staffing levels."

Only public toilets at the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove, Park Road in Rottingdean, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Stanmer Village, and The Level will remain open.

All open from 8am to 8pm except in Park Road, where the toilets close at 4pm.

The city council will reopen the toilets "as soon as is appropriate".
