Regarding the comments of Councillor Taylor about the cost of learning disability services (The Argus, November 14), I agree that council taxpayers should get value for money.
However, when it comes to providing services for the city's most vulnerable residents, it is harder to quantify. As the parent of one of those receiving services out of area, I would challenge Coun Taylor's assertion that services could be better provided within the city.
My daughter has tuberous sclerosis which has resulted in her having severe autism and learning disabilities.
There is no provider in the city that can meet her very specific needs so this is provided by a service in Hampshire. They provide her with an excellent level of service leading to a reasonably happy and contented life. If he thinks the city can afford to set up a service with the experience and expertise needed then lets look into the costs. I think he will find it is far cheaper to buy in these services.
As for the travelling, I would travel to the ends of the earth to get the services my daughter needs as long as I knew it was the right thing for her.
