TWO men appeared in court accused of murdering a man in the street.

Daryl Richardson and Bobby Smith are accused of killing Muhammed Lamin Jassey in Whitehawk on April 5.

Mr Jassey, 26, from Brighton, was allegedly stabbed during an incident in Whitehawk Road near the junction with Findon Road.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, but died on the same day.

Police then launched a murder inquiry, Operation Heathland.

Richardson, 26, and Smith, 21, both unemployed, were charged on Thursday evening with murder, and appeared via video link at Brighton Magistrates' Court.

Two other men, aged 25 and 41, who were also arrested on suspicion of murder remain on police bail until May 4, while the investigation continues.

Police say that two women, aged 21 and 38, who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender were released from custody. The 21-year-old remains under investigation, but the 38-year-old will face no further police action.

Now Richardson, of Cumberland Road, Portsmouth, and Smith, of no fixed address, will next appear via video link before Judge Christine Laing QC at Lewes Crown Court on Monday.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Geldart of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “We urge anyone with information to come forward.”

"We continue to actively pursue lines of enquiry and would urge anyone with information to come forward."

"In particular we would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and has any dashcam or other video footage."

Anyone with information should report it on the Sussex Police website or call 101 and quote Operation Heathland.
