A DOMESTIC abuser, a teen who stabbed a love rival, burglars and a thug who spat at police were among those jailed in April.

All trials by jury have been suspended, which means there are not as many serious cases being heard at Lewes, Hove and Brighton Crown Courts.

At the magistrates’ court most cases are being adjourned to a later date, in line with Government advice on social distancing.

So only the most serious cases are being handled by the courts, while defendants who have been found guilty, or who have admitted their crimes, are facing justice.

Among them was Darren Worsfold, who had been on the police’s “most wanted” list over incidents in Burgess Hill.

The 41-year-old was sent to prison for eight weeks for breaching a Domestic Violence Protection Order.

Worsfold, of West Street, Burgess Hill, pictured right, admitted using threatening or abusive behaviour likely to provoke fear of violence, and behaviour likely to provoke fear of criminal damage.

Court documents reveal that the abuser had threatened to kick down a door at a woman’s address and showed he has a previous history of violence.

Meanwhile The Argus also reported on 19-year-old Finley Apps, of St Peters Road, Portslade, who was jailed for six years.

Apps had gone to a party in Bevendean Crescent, Brighton, while high on cannabis.

He was jealous because his ex-girlfriend had ended their relationship. He went upstairs to where she was with another young man and stabbed him three times.

The courts have also been called to deal with burglars during the lockdown.

Jonathan Turner was caught on CCTV burgling a One Stop convenience store in Chichester.

Unfortunately for the 35-year-old, of Duncan Road, Chichester, he was recognised easily as a regular customer by staff.

He was jailed for three months.

Daniel Passmore was also on the police’s “most wanted” list over burglaries.

The 25-year-old raided three people’s homes in Eastbourne as they slept.

He was remanded in custody and will learn his full sentence next month.

Finally Michael Jones appeared in the dock for spitting at police and twisting the wrist of one officer, and attacking security guards.

The incident happened in North Street, Brighton, and the 49-year-old admitted assaulting two officers and making threats to the guards.

He was jailed for 38 weeks.
