Fire crews worked into the night to extinguish a fire in a heavily-smoke logged flat.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended the property in Longford Road in Bognor at about 10.45pm last night.

The fire had broken out in a basement flat, which was unoccupied, and all residents in other parts of the building were evacuated.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to reports of a fire in a domestic property in Longford Road in Bognor Regis at 10.42pm.

“Two crews from Bognor Regis, along with one from Chichester and one from Littlehampton attended the scene with the Command Support Unit from Haywards Heath.

“Upon arrival they found a fire in the basement of the property, which was unoccupied and under renovation.

"The occupants of the ground floor and first floor flats were evacuated as a precaution.

"The fire was quickly located and extinguished by firefighters who used two high pressure hose reels and one safety jet to extinguish the fire."

The fire service said the flat suffered "extensive fire damage and heavy smoke damage", while the flats above suffered with light smoke logging.

The spokeman added: “To make the electricity supply safe, Southern Scottish Electricity (SSE) attended to cap the supply in the road to make it safe.

"The last crew left the scene at 12.26am.”
