SUSSEX Police have cordoned off another area of the city centre after discovering a second explosive.

The force found the shell in the garden of a home in Chatham Place, Brighton.

A spokesman said: "The rusted item, though to be a small shell, was found in the garden of a house and reported to police at 3.36pm.

"Road closures have been put in place around the area as a precaution including the junctions with Seven Dials and Old Shoreham Road and Howard Terrace, Howard Place, Bath Street and Prestonville Road.

"An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been made aware and is due to carry out an assessment at the scene."

This follows another explosive, thought to be an unexploded mortar, being detonated in an enclosed area off Grand Parade, near St Peter's church.

Shocked residents reported hearing a "loud bang" across the city.

Police say the two incidents are not connected.

Shortly before 6pm, police knocked on the doors of residents in the area surrounding Chatham Place and urged them to stay indoors.

One resident said they were told that a piece of "second world war ordnance" had been found and the inicident "would be resolved in the next hour or so".

At 7.40pm, Brighton and Hove Police provided a final update on an explosive day for Brighton.

A spokesman said:  "We would like to inform you that the road closures around the Chatham Place area in Brighton have now been lifted.

"Our officers and EOD bomb-disposal colleagues were dealing with an unexploded munition, which has now safely been removed.

"Thank you for your patience."
