Firefighters have been called to the rescue at homes that have been hit by floods and lightning.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has received a number of emergency reports of extreme weather damage tonight.

The first was in West Green Drive, Crawley, at about 9.35pm where several homes were flooded after torrential rain. Firefighters have arrived and are trying to stop water going into the premises. They are currently waiting for the Highways Agency to bring sandbags.

The fire control centre has also received a call about possible flooding at the business park in Brighton Road, Crawley, but so far has not sent out any crews as water has not yet been reported to have entered any buildings.

A roof has collapsed after lightning hit a home in Hillside Road, Storrington, at 10.14pm.

And a television exploded after lightning struck a house in Angmering Lane, East Preston, near Littlehampton, at 10.17pm.

When The Argus spoke to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service a few minutes ago, firefighters were on their way to both addresses.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has not received any emergency calls related to the weather but is on high alert.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning up to midnight tonight.
