PLANS to build 18 apartments on a former garage block have been given the go-ahead.

It was agreed that a third of the flats at the three-storey development in Sompting would be easily affordable.

On Monday night, Adur District Council’s planning committee approved Hamilton Investments’ proposal to develop a site north of St Peter’s Place off Western Road.

The developer pledged that 30 per cent of the homes would be affordable, and there will be an emphasis on low-cost rent.

The council said this would help Adur residents on the housing waiting list.

The development will incorporate sustainable measures including green roofs, solar panels and electric charging points.

There will also be a 2.4 metre high acoustic fence to separate the building from the nearby industrial park.

The planning committee agreed to approve the scheme pending checks with Southern Water over its proximity to the nearby wastewater treatment works. They thought it would enhance the appearance of the area.

The committee also requested that the applicant make an £18,000 contribution towards open spaces in Sompting and a £35,000 contribution towards improving local transport and libraries.
