COASTGUARDS have winched a man up a sheer cliff face after he was cut off by the tide.
The dramatic rescue at Seaford Head earlier this evening was watched by Nick Drake, a National Coastwatch Institution volunteer.
He said a man had been spotted being surrounded by the rising water on the beach at Splash Point, and that coastguard teams from Newhaven and Birling Gap were called to the scene.
A rescuer scaled the cliff, descending on a harness to reach the man.
He was then seen being winched about 100 feet to the top of the cliff, where he was taken in the care of the coastguard.
The man is understood to have been sitting on a beach towel and holding a guitar shortly before he was rescued.
HM Coastguard said it had recieved at call just after 7.30pm reporting that a person appeared to be cut off by the tide.
A spokeswoman said rescue teams from Newhaven and Birling Gap carried out a "technical cliff rescue" to bring the man to safety.
