Tempers became frayed yesterday as tips reopened for the first time since the lockdown began.

The Hove waste site in Old Shoreham Road and the tip in Wilson Avenue, Brighton, are both back in action.

A new cycle lane was confusing people at the Hove tip and a “one-in-one-out” policy meant motorists had to drive round the site several times before being let in.

The Argus:

A sign near the site said: “If the access road is full, please come back at another time.”

Furious George Dayam, who was delivering his garden waste at about 11am, said: “I’ve spent 15 minutes going around and around.

“When you ask staff how to get in they just say ‘move on’ without any explanation.

“They should have some explanation about what is going on.”

About 20 cars can queue on the side road into the tip, with seven allowed inside the site at any one time.

When the Argus visited yesterday, the side road was full and people wanting to turn into it from Old Shoreham Road were told to drive away. Motorists were becoming visibly frustrated.

The Argus:

Lee Bolingbroke, who managed to get into the queue after five laps around, said: “I got in through pure pot luck.

“It’s difficult to say what would work as there’s no real solution. What was happening though is that people were starting to queue in the inside lane, which is now a new cycling lane.”

The temporary cycle lane was painted on the road last weekend and runs for 1.7 miles in both directions.

People were queuieng in the lane, which has double yellow lines, when the tip opened at about 10am.

Brighton and Hove City Council had to use cones to block access. However, this did not stop some – one person was seen driving into the cones in an attempt to use the route.

Another queueing motorist, who did not want to be named, said: “We were turned away, so we went to Shoreham and then were turned away there because we’re Brighton residents.”

A council spokesman said: “We realise residents will be anxious to use the sites, but people must also know they could be waiting hours before they get to the front of the queue and on to the site.

“Cars will not be allowed to park or queue in Old Shoreham Road or Wilson Avenue.

“Strict traffic measures will be in force with people driving to the site only being allowed to queue on the smaller access roads leading to the tips and not the major approach roads.

“If the tip roads are full, drivers will be asked to move and told to return when the queues are shorter.

“The council is appealing to people to only visit the sites if waste cannot be stored at home without it causing a risk of injury, health or harm to the household members.”
