A SHOP has been opened in a care home and is run by the residents.

The tuck shop in Arlington House, Hove, was opened on Wednesday after a suggestion from a resident called Morag.

Morag’s Mini Mart, which sells chocolates and crisps, is staffed by residents of the dementia home in Tennis Road and replaces a pub which had been created in 2018.

Manager David Steedman said: “Morag thought a shop would be a good idea so we asked the residents what they would like it stocked with.

“No surprise, chocolates and crisps came out top.

“The shop was set it up in the bar and well stocked with a variety of goods to ‘test the market’.

“We were sure the shop was a good idea but weren’t expecting it to be such a run-away success, with residents shopping till they dropped, not literally of course, so we knew we had a hit on our hands.

“Thank you Morag.”

The tuck shop replaces a private bar fitted with a fruit machine, tap beers and spirits, which was named The Tennis Arms.

Customers at The Tennis Arms can enjoy pub lunches, quizzes, bingo and even weekend football on the bar’s 30-inch TV.

Speaking about the new shop, Mr Steedman said: “We are delighted to see the residents enjoy a sense of normality and it’s a distraction to what is happening.”
