BUILDING material fell from a lorry onto a busy street.

A crane had to be used to move the large load, which was being carried by a lorry at the 3Ts Royal Sussex County Hospital site, after it fell into Eastern Road at about midday.

It is reported the incident caused traffic chaos after the road was blocked off for about 30 minutes.

Pictures from the scene show the load being hoisted by a crane after it was dropped into the eastbound route, smashing into a hoarding at the development site.

Several workers stood around a nearby bus stop while attempting to move the material while traffic built up in both directions.

A spokeswoman for Laing O’Rourke, which runs the site, said: “An incident took place earlier today where a load from a lorry became dislodged and blocked part of Eastern Road for a period of around 30 minutes.

“Nobody was injured during the incident.

“The road has now re-opened and we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. A full investigation of the event is now underway.”

The work was being carried out on Stage 1 of the 3Ts Redevelopment.

It occupies the south-east quarter of the hospital site.

In all, the 3Ts Redevelopment will improve the care environment for the patients and staff of more than forty wards and departments.

The Argus:

The upper floors of Stage 1 will host a range of wards, many of which will have come from the Barry Building, the oldest acute ward block in the NHS.

These wards will have five times as much space per bed when they move.
