CAR parks were closed yesterday after visitors descended on a beach.

Sussex Police were at Camber as authorities look to “manage” the situation.

A Rother District Council spokesman said: “All car parks at Camber were closed as (they are) full due to the volume of people travelling to the beach.

“Sussex Police were on hand to help us manage this.

“We also received reports of other beaches in the area being very busy.

“Please stay safe and don’t travel to our beaches.”

The council had, earlier, issued a warning that social distancing on the beach had been made “increasingly difficult” by large numbers of visitors.

Speaking shortly after noon yesterday, the spokesman said: “It was high tide at Camber beach leaving only a small strip of sand for beach goers.

“It was already very busy, making social distancing increasingly difficult.

“There are also no lifeguards – please stay safe and consider whether you need to go to the beach.”

Lockdown measures were eased last Wednesday, allowing people to drive to outdoor areas for exercise or recreation.

The loosened rules also allow people to go for a picnic, sunbathe and sit in public spaces, as well as swim in the sea or take part in watersports.

But people are still urged to adhere to social distancing guidelines... staying two metres away from those they do not live with.
