A hard-working councillor has collapsed and died at his home.

Mike Howard, 63, is believed to have died after suffering an asthma attack this morning at his address in Ravens Road, Shoreham.

He had called his doctor during the severe attack but unfortunately medical help arrived too late and entry to the home had to be forced.

Coun Howard, who had been a member of Adur District Council for the past seven years, served on the authority's constitution and audit committee, its development and scrutiny committee and was the chairman of both the licensing committee and the licensing appeals committee.

The Conservative councillor represented St Mary's ward on the council.

Coun Howard described himself as a lover of sports on the council's website. On it he also described his ambitions as a councillor.

He wrote: "I would like the knowledge that I have helped people and in some way have ensured that Adur is a place people are happy to live in and are happy to visit."

Details of the funeral have yet to be announced.
