COASTGUARD teams are appealing to the public not to park in front of gates.

Birling Gap and Newhaven Coastguard issued reminders for drivers not to block access points after incidents on Bank Holiday Monday where crews had to call police to remove offending vehicles.

Newhaven crews tried to exit the promenade at Steyning Avenue, Peacehaven, but two vehicles were parked in front of the gate.

Police were organising a tow truck for one of the vehicles when the car’s owner returned, and advice was issued to drivers of both vehicles.

Birling Gap Coastguard teams also reported inconsiderate parking in front of their station.

Newhaven and Shoreham teams were blocked from accessing a meeting on Brighton Pier by a car parked in a Keep Clear bay.

Police were called and the driver, who was uninsured, was issued with a fine and six points on his licence.

Birling Gap Coastguard said: “It is vitally important your parking does not block emergency access or our station.

"Police will remove offending vehicles as they hinder lifesaving response.

“Remember, if you block a Coastguard station or access point, it may prevent us rescuing your loved one.”
