POLICE have launched appeals for information after two city centre incidents which are believed to have involved knives.

The violent "altercations" happened within 24 hours of one another in Brighton.

At 4.30pm yesterday, officers were called to Ditchling Road, near The Level, after reports of a confrontation.

Four police cars were sent to the scene and remained at the park as officers investigated the incident.

The Argus:

They found a man with a hand injury which is "thought to have been caused by a small blade".

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment for the "minor injury".

A police presence remained at The Level for several hours after the incident and officers cordoned off an area near the skate park.

A 24-year-old has now been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, and Sussex Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or can provide further information on the altercation, to contact them.

The Argus:

A spokesman said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any other information about what happened, is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1175 of 25/05."

This incident came only 18 hours after another altercation involving a knife in a city centre street.

Officers were called to Western Road in Brighton shortly before 10.30pm on Sunday "to reports of an altercation involving a knife".

Images from the scene showed one officer pointing a Taser at a person, who was out of shot.

The Argus:

Meanwhile a police car was parked diagonally across the highway behind him, blocking the road outside the Shoe Zone store.

Later, a person in handcuffs with their head covered was seen being escorted to the police car by two officers.

A witness said they heard a “commotion” in the street and saw “a policeman with a Taser make the arrest”.

They also said they had seen a knife "being bagged up for evidence” following the incident.

The Argus:

A spokeswoman said: "Police were called to Western Road at 10.20pm on Sunday to reports of an altercation involving a knife.

"A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article. He remains in custody for questioning.

"No injuries were reported.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened can report online or call 101, quoting serial 1640 of 24/05."
