STREET markets are a focal point for Saturday shoppers searching for deals and rare finds.

So many will be happy to hear the Government plans to allow outdoor markets to reappear in our streets from June 1.

A Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy spokesman said the risk of transmitting the virus is lower in outdoor settings.

Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed street markets will be permitted to operate in the city from June “as long as Government guidance is followed”.

This means open-air markets such as the Upper Gardner Street Saturday market in North Laine could be up and running again next month.

One stall holder who did not wished to be named said: “Personally I think it’s too early to reopen.

“But I know other stall holders who are desperate to get back to work.”

Meanwhile the Brighton Open Market has remained partially open for some traders to run food stalls.

But the market’s board is still deciding on a date for a wider reopening.

Car showrooms will also be able to open from June 1 as they often have “significant outdoor space”, the Government said.

But hairdressers, nail bars and the hospitality businesses will remain closed until further notice.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma said reopening businesses will be a “critical step” in rebuilding the UK’s economy.

“The high street sits at the heart of every community in the country,” he said.

“Enabling these businesses to open will be a critical step on the road to rebuilding our economy and will support millions of jobs across the UK.

“The guidance we have set out today provides a vital framework to get shops open in a way that is safe for everyone.

“It explains how retail workers who are not currently working can go back to work as safely as possible and feel confident in their workplace.

“And it reassures customers that shops are properly assessing the risks.”
