NO STATE schools will be open in Brighton on Monday, according to the city council.

This comes after Brighton and Hove City Council announced it was advising schools not to reopen next week, saying it is not yet safe to do so.

The authority's decision goes against PM Boris Johnson's plans to open primary schools on June 1.

The Prime Minister confirmed on Thursday that children in nursery, reception and Years 1 and 6 will be able to return to the classroom on June 1 in England, after most pupils were sent home amid the coronavirus lockdown.

But Brighton and Hove City Council said the Government’s test and trace programme has not given it enough confidence, and said schools and council nurseries in the city should not yet open more widely for pupils.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: "As things currently stand we believe none of our schools are opening on Monday."

West Sussex County Council expects most primary schools in the county will begin the phased reopening next week.

East Sussex County Council also believes “the vast majority” will be open in some capacity from Monday.

Schools will remain open to vulnerable pupils and the children of key workers.
