A YOUNG violinist who is deaf in one ear has won a competition for his performance during a Clap for Carers event.

Matthew English suffers from microtia-atresia, a condition in which the ear and ear canal do not develop fully.

The 14-year-old from Lancing entered his rendition of Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi into Dorking Halls theatre’s competition and was one of three winners who received the most votes for his performance.

Matthew is caring for his grandmother in Kent and played from her balcony after a Thursday evening Clap for Carers event.

He said: “I wanted to play the violin from when I was very young.

"I hope winning this competition will help raise awareness of microtia-atresia and hearing loss and inspire other children with similar conditions to follow their dreams.

“I’ve enjoyed cheering people during lockdown just before the clapping for NHS and carers.

"I help care for my grandmother and appreciate how important it is to look after those we love, so I play the tune in dedication of all those who are carers.”

There were 41 entries in total from all ages, including reggae, acoustic harmonies, pop covers, choirs, a brass ensemble, rock and a piano medley.

Matthew will will perform alongside other winners at Dorking Halls in Surrey when it reopens.
