Officers appealing for witnesses have made a further arrest following the assault of a teenage girl in a popular town park that has left a community shaken and horrified.

The 16-year-old was out running on Wednesday morning when an incident occurred on The Old Railway Line alongside Harris Park, Cockermouth at about 8.30am.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and released on police bail.

A 19-year-old man has been released with no further action.

The girl received minor scratches during the assault by a male - these did no require medical treatment.

A police spokesman said: "We are not looking for anybody else in relation to this incident and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their valuable assistance.

"We are continuing our appeal for witnesses who may have been in the park at that time to make contact."

Councillors have been left shocked by the attack, describing it as “very unusual and unexpected” for the town.

Mayor of Cockermouth, Councillor Julie Laidlow, said: “Cockermouth is usually a very safe town, so it was a shock to hear about the assault.

“I really hope she’s alright, and this is just an isolated incident.”

She added: “People should continue with their exercise, and if we remain vigilant when outside, this sort of awful thing hopefully won’t happen again.”
