The government announcement that public transport users will soon have to wear face masks is long overdue.

The issues around public transport in the crisis has reflected the terrible ambivalence that always blights proper analysis of these vital services.

Issues are judged by a few photos of overcrowded London tubes, and understandably death rates of ethnic minority workers in the capital. Many are terrified of using them.

But, in my albeit limited experience, the buses through Lewes are virtually empty and the trains similarly. Does this mean it would be wrong to use them for leisure purposes outside of peak times? Apparently it is OK to cram popular destinations with people by private cars driving any distance.

I am also surprised that so few staff on both buses and rail wear masks. It is vital to bring back public confidence in all public means of travel.
